Crispy Frozen Hashbrowns in Air Fryer

Making air fryer frozen hashbrowns are a favorite in my house, and so easy that even kids can help with prep. All you need is a bit of oil, salt, and some frozen hashbrowns in the air fryer!

Ingredients

  • 16 oz. shredded hash browns
  • 2 Tablespoons oil of choice alt. oil spray as needed

Instructions

  • Do not preheat before putting the hashbrowns in. Carefully place your frozen hashbrowns in the air fryer.
  • Set your air fryer to 380°F (195ºC) and let it preheat for a couple minutes to defrost the hash browns (the preheat may take up to 5 minutes, depending on your air fryer).
  • When it prompts you to add food, arrange the hash browns in a single layer, pushing them against the sides of the basket, if needed.
  • Then drizzle your oil on top or spray them with a tolerated oil spray, and cook the hashbrowns for 12-14 minutes, flipping them halfway through or just shaking the basket to move them around more. If you don't put enough oil, they won't cook evenly, so use up to one extra tablespoon of oil, if needed.
  • Check to make sure they're fully cooked before pouring the hashbrowns onto your plate. They may look a bit overbrowned, but as long as they're not blackened, they're still good. Then just season with salt and any other tolerated spices you enjoy, and breakfast is served!

Notes

Other Oils: You can use a fat other than avocado oil, but make sure it’s a high-heat cooking oil such as tallow or high-heat coconut oil, or even a tolerated cooking spray.
Adding Flavor: to mix up the flavors, I like to top the hashbrowns with chopped garlic and dried rosemary or even a bit chopped meat. Alternative seasonings include za'atar, fajita seasoning, or steak seasoning (if tolerated). You can also just replace the rosemary with ¼ teaspoon chili powder or paprika if not eating low histamine.
Re-freezing: I wouldn’t recommend putting these back in the freezer once cooked, as it will negatively affect the texture quite a bit, making them mushy. This is why I purposefully used just a pound of frozen hashbrowns in the air fryer; it can easily be halved or doubled for varying crowd sizes, or made with sweet potatoes, though the recipe is meant more for plain hashbrowns that you plan to top with something delicious.
