✔️ Why This Recipe is Great
Season as Desired: These frozen hashbrowns are simply flavored so that they can be paired with any dish, but you can also add a smattering of fresh herbs, minced garlic, fresh cheese & scallions, or even a touch of flavored salt to totally change the final dish.
Super Simple: If you need an easy & quick low histamine side dish for dinner, this should stay at the top of your list. You can make it year-round, and it goes from freezer to table with less than 3 minutes of work! They're a particularly great addition to a low histamine breakfast or brunch, and so easy that kids can help out with any step.
Low Histamine Comfort Food: With all the restrictions, finding low histamine comfort foods can be hard, but these easy potatoes fulfill the requirements of warm, crisp, savory, and satisfying.
🥔 Ingredients

Frozen Hashbrowns: you can theoretically use any type of frozen hashbrowns for this recipe, but I've only tested this timing & temperature with the shredded type of hashbrowns. I like the Cascadian Farms Organic ones, since the only ingredient is potatoes.
Oil: I used avocado oil for this recipe, but you can use any high-heat oil you tolerate. Coconut oil is another good option, but check out my post on low histamine oils for more ideas.

🍟 How to Make Air Fryer Hashbrowns (Step-by-Step)
Step 1) Do not preheat before putting the hashbrowns in. Carefully place your frozen hashbrowns in the air fryer (images 1 & 2).

Step 2) Set your air fryer to 380°F (195ºC) and let it preheat for a couple minutes to defrost the hash browns (the preheat may take up to 5 minutes, depending on your air fryer). When it prompts you to add food, arrange the hash browns in a single layer, pushing them against the sides of the basket, if needed (image 3).

Step 3) Then drizzle your oil on top or spray them with a tolerated oil spray, and cook the hashbrowns for 12-14 minutes, flipping them halfway through or just shaking the basket to move them around more (image 4). If you don't put enough oil, they won't cook evenly, so use up to one extra tablespoon of oil, if needed.

Step 4) Check to make sure they're fully cooked before pouring the hashbrowns onto your plate (image 5). They may look a bit overbrowned, but as long as they're not blackened, they're still good and crispy crunchy. Then just season with salt and any other tolerated spices you enjoy, and breakfast is served!
🧂 Variations
- Garlic Hash Browns: Sprinkle a small amount of garlic powder over the potatoes before air frying for a savory flavor boost.
- Herb Hash Browns: Toss the shredded potatoes with a pinch of dried rosemary, thyme, or oregano for a fragrant herb variation.
- Onion Hash Browns: Mix in a tablespoon of finely minced fresh onion for extra depth of flavor.
- Crispy Sea Salt Finish: Add a pinch of flaky sea salt right after cooking for extra crunch and flavor.
- Spiced Hash Browns: Lightly season with a pinch of ground cumin or coriander for a subtle warm spice note.
- Sumac Hash Browns: Sprinkle a small amount of sumac after cooking for a mild tangy flavor that pairs well with potatoes.
👨🏻🍳 Expert Notes & Tips
Other Oils: You can use a fat other than avocado oil, but make sure it’s a high-heat cooking oil such as tallow or high-heat coconut oil, or even a tolerated cooking spray.
Adding Flavor: to mix up the flavors, I like to top the hashbrowns with chopped garlic and dried rosemary or even a bit chopped meat. Alternative seasonings include za'atar, fajita seasoning, or steak seasoning (if tolerated). You can also just replace the rosemary with ¼ teaspoon chili powder or paprika if not eating low histamine.
Re-freezing: I wouldn’t recommend putting these back in the freezer once cooked, as it will negatively affect the texture quite a bit, making them mushy. This is why I purposefully used just a pound of frozen hashbrowns in the air fryer; it can easily be halved or doubled for varying crowd sizes, or made with sweet potatoes, though the recipe is meant more for plain hashbrowns that you plan to top with something delicious.
