📋 Why air fry frozen roast potatoes?
Air fryer roasted potatoes are healthier and tastier than any other method of preparing roasted potatoes, including in the toaster oven, microwave, stovetop, or conventional oven. This is because any excess fat drips off into the air fryer, keeping the potatoes crispy without extra calories.
They're super quick, as they generally already come seasoned with both oil and salt added, though you can also buy some that come spiced, if tolerated.
These potatoes take just 2 minutes of active work, as there's no need to thaw them. You can just directly air fry them and the result will fulfill the comfort food requirements of warm, crisp, savory, and satisfying.
Great as a side dish or snack, they're a particularly great addition to a low histamine breakfast or brunch, and so easy that older kids can be put in charge.
Plus they're gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, and fully plant based, as they're made with just one ingredient.
🥔 Ingredients
Frozen Roast Potatoes: you can use any type of small frozen roast potatoes for this recipe, but I've only tested this timing & temperature with baby roast potatoes. I like the Alexia Roasted & Ready ones, since the only ingredients are potatoes, olive oil, and salt.
See recipe card for exact quantities.

⭐ How to make frozen potatoes in air fryer: step-by-step instructions
Step 1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (205ºC) for 3-4 minutes before putting the potatoes in. If your potatoes are plain like mine and you want to flavor them with any extra seasonings, this is the best time to pour them into a bowl and toss them with 1-2 teaspoons of seasonings.
Step 2. Once it prompts you to add food, pour your frozen roasted potatoes in the air fryer, making sure they're as spaced-apart as possible, pushing them against the sides of the basket if needed. I don't recommend using an air fryer paper liner for this recipe, to allow the most air circulation to crisp up the potatoes.
Step 3. Most frozen roast potatoes come with oil already on the outside since they're precooked, but if yours don't, then spray them with a tolerated oil spray and cook them for 16-18 minutes (add 2 more minutes for larger frozen potatoes), shaking the basket halfway through.
Step 4. Check to make sure they're fork tender before pouring the crispy potatoes onto your plate. Then just taste one and season with any extra salt you desire, and they're all ready to enjoy! Serve with your favorite sauce, if unseasoned.
👨🏻🍳 Expert notes & tips
Don't Overfill: try not to overcrowd the roast potatoes in the air fryer, keeping the basket half full or less, or else the potatoes will steam more than crisp up.
No Thaw: put the frozen roasted potatoes in the air fryer directly
Serve Hot: don't keep the potatoes in the closed air fryer, or else the steam that accumulates as they cool off will make the potatoes less crispy, more like boiled than roasted.
Re-freezing: I wouldn’t recommend putting these back in the freezer once cooked, as it will negatively affect the texture quite a bit, making them mushy.
This is why I purposefully use just a pound of frozen potatoes in the air fryer; it can easily be halved or doubled for varying crowd sizes, or made with sweet potatoes, though roasted frozen sweet potatoes are hard to find.
🥘 Variations & seasoning suggestions
These are a great base for making air fryer smashed potatoes. To add a twist on the usual air fryer roast potatoes, simply remove each potato piece from the air fryer and smash them gently. Then return them to the air fryer and drizzle with a talespoon of oil and optional toppings before air frying at 400°F (205ºC) for another 5 minutes. If tolerated, substitute mustard oil for your usual oil..
These roast potatoes can be paired with any dish, but you can also add a smattering of toppings to totally change the flavor of the potatoes if enjoying them as a snack. Try:
- fresh herbs
- minced garlic
- fresh cheese & scallions
- a touch of flavored salt
- any number of great sauces
- za'atar with garlic powder
- fajita seasoning or steak seasoning (if tolerated)
