About this recipe
Easy Blueberry Mocktail: this is my way of using up more of the powerfully antihistamine fresh blueberries available this time of year, with a special nod in the notes to to making this blueberry mocktail with frozen blueberries.
Low Histamine Drink: I always get requests from readers for non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy in the summer, and this is my next drink to add to the collection. If you'd like to spike it a bit, however, just swap the ginger beer or sparkling water for 1-2oz. of vodka or another plain low histamine alcohol.
Easy to Make & Batch: with just 4 ingredients and no blender needed, this blueberry lavender mocktail couldn't get much simpler. It's also very easy to make 8-10 times over for large groups, or even have kids make it themselves, and control the sweetness with plain sugar-free simple syrup.
Ingredients
Blueberries: whether you use fresh or frozen berries, these are the star of the show. They're also a strongly antihistamine fruit, as a rich source in mast cell-stabilizing antioxidants.
Ginger Beer: Fever Tree is just an example of what brand of ginger beer you could use for a blueberry mocktail, though in my opinion it does the best job of adding a bite like alcohol does, but without actually adding any.
Lavender Simple Syrup: this adds sweet herbaceousness & balance to the beverage, and you can use a sugar-free granulated sweetener to make it at home (and offer no glycemic impact!). For a quick swap without a lavender flavor, you can make a microwave simple syrup at home in about 5 minutes.
Thai Basil: these are optional for a more kid-friendly blueberry mocktail. But if you want to use them, then you'll need roughly 3-4 fresh leaves for a single drink, ideally using thai basil, though you can also use plain sweet basil.
How to make a lavender blueberry mocktail: step-by-step instructions
Step 1. In a large mug muddle the blueberries and lavender syrup (and thai basil, if using).
Step 2. Then add the ice and ginger beer, top with the water, stir everything lightly, garnish with fresh berries & enjoy!
Note: you can use ginger beer for all the liquid portion (about 8oz.), but the first time I made this, the flavor was too strong and overwhelmed both the lavender and blueberry, but enjoy it however you prefer!
Recipe notes & tips
Swapping Lavender Syrup: there's no requirement to use lavender syrup if you don't have time to make any or would prefer a different flavor. Good alternatives include basil syrup, spearmint syrup, or even another fruity syrup.
Brand of Ginger Beer: I quite enjoy the Fever Tree ginger beer, but it does have about 10g of sugar per serving, so if that's important to you, you may want to look for a low-sugar option. I like the Poppi brand of prebiotic drinks, but in a pinch some sparkling water with ginger simple syrup could also be a decent sub.
Using Frozen Blueberries: to use frozen blueberries rather than fresh, measure out ⅓ cup of frozen berries rather than the ½ cup called-for, and let them sit out at room temperature for 10-30 minutes before you start muddling and proceed with the rest of the recipe.
Adjusting the Sweetness: adding more simple syrup of your choosing will increase the sweetness of the drink, though be careful to taste as you go, so as to not to add too much. You can balance it out with some thai basil or extra blueberries, if you go overboard.
